Santana 2023 New Ballast Tank Water Intake & Pumpout System
Santana 2023 New Ballast Tank Water Intake & Pumpout System
All Santana 2023 sailboats have a water ballast tank that is filled and drained by opening a valve in the hull. Draining is done when the boat is removed from the water on a trailer. Skylark, a 2023A model, has been modified by sealing the OEM valve opening and installing a standard 1.5" bronze seacock to fill the tank and a Whale Gusher Titan thru-deck bilge pump for emptying. This allows the ballast tank to be emptied when Skylark is on a mooring. Air escapes from the tank when filling by means of hose & valve vent through the existing sink drain thru-hull.

Shown is a 1.250" bronze Buck Algonquin Full Flow Ball Valve attached to a bronze thru-hull & 90 degree elbow. The output side of the valve goes thru a curved 90 degree pipe-to-hose adapter and a section of heavy wall marine water hose attached to a 1.5" Perko Narrow Flange plastic thru-hull mounted inside the ballast tank forward bulkhead. Double stainless steel clamps are used to secure the hose ends. This arrangement neatly bypassed the battery, placed the water intake at the bottom of the the bulkhead near the hull, and allows easy access to the valve handle through the access opening in the compartment between the ballast tank and the bow flotation compartment.
